On your ducted AC system, this is within the return air grille where the air is drawn in. When cleaning the filter, always inspect for tears, excessive dust build-up behind the filter, or clogging that cannot be removed. This, along with a reduction in performance, is normally a sign it’s time for a filter replacement.
